Socialist society for a socialist life

  • PDF

As another international workers day approaches, we from the Front Line Socialist Party came here to meet with you and initiate a very significant discussion.

Known to most of our countrymen as May Day, the international workers day is celepated in the capital Colombo with thundering processions marching through its streets and eventually ending up in passionate speeches delivered by our political leaders. Some processions even culminatein a musical show.

Daily papers, weekend papers… all dedicate a few of their pages to this May Day. More often than not, the worn out, sweat adorned face of a working class comrade in Pettah, is seen portrayed in these papers. But have you ever seen those comrades in any of these May Day processions?

If we ask you, what is the objective of celepating May Day in present-day Lanka, what would your answer be? Is it truly your day, the workers? Or has it been taken away from you by some other force? If it has been in fact taken away from you, then how exactly do you get it back? How do we remove May Day from its present state of being a mere annual celepation and give it a new meaning? How do we integrate May Day into the process of obtaining a real victory for the oppressed working class? These are the questions that we need to discuss and solve.

Imperialist Intentions in Geneva and the Desperation of Tamil Nationalists

  • PDF

Comrade SK Senthivel, General Secretary of the New-Democratic Marxist-Leninist Party addressed a meeting for the youth held at the Jaffna office of the Party. The following is an excerpt of his address.

The US has exposed its imperialist ulterior motives by releasing the draft text of the resolution that it intends to ping up at the United Nations Human Rights Council Sessions in Geneva. Not knowing that, the US-loyalist Tamil nationalist leaders conducted false propaganda among Tamils that the Geneva resolution would turn out to be a great blessing to the Tamils.

Now they are moaning and groaning that they have been let down. This is an expression of their short-sighted narrow politics with loyalty to the White maters with little understanding of imperialism. What we witness today is an expression of the politics of foreign loyalty of the Tamil leadership which is unable to make out whether the wolf is shedding tears out of its own hunger or out of pity for the goat getting drenched in the rain.

From the last century to this day, members of the so-called Tamil leadership have been loyal stooges of pitish colonialists and then the US imperialists. But the Tamil people have not been rewarded with any political returns for all the submissive loyalty shown by the Tamil leadership. The pitish and later the Americans have always been on the side of the ruling Sinhala Buddhist ruling class elite.

Join together for the safeguarding the fundamental human rights of people of Lanka.

  • PDF

Since the independence in Lanka, the political parties and their leaders for their political existence, oppressed the fundamental rights of ordinary people’s freedom of expression. Race, Religion and ethnicity were used and still being used to instigate people against each other. In addition, oppressive laws are implemented to take away the people’s rights to mobilize and raise their voices against the atrocities of the plutocratic classes rules Lanka from time to time.

It can be many examples. Especially the legisaltion passed to grab the citizenship of people of upcountry, ethnic riots against the Tamil and the Muslim people systematically carried out. Call of the armed forces to crash down the labour strikes and demonstrations are few such examples to be mentioned here.

The decentralised political power in parliament were thrown. Instead a new system of executive presidency which gave tremendous power to a single candidate at the top adopted by J.R Jeyawadana. This system is an undemocratic tool in single person’s hand to suppress the people's basic rights further and to throw some democratic laws still safeguarded some rights to the people. Several such anti democratic and anti people laws were passed after the implementation of this executive presidency system.

A hardline faction within Nepal's governing Maoist party has said it is breaking away to form a separate party.
