  • PDF

Movement for Peoples Struggle – UK held a protest demonstration in front of Sri Lanka High Commission in London on 19 December, 2011. London demonstration joined the wave of demonstrations being held in Sri Lanka and in foreign countries to urge ruling party administration in Sri Lanka to release abducted and illegally detained two MPS activists, Lalith Kumara Veeraraj and Kugan Muruganathan, in Jaffna on 9 December while organizing a MPS media conference scheduled to be held on the following day.

Sri Lankans in London braved extreme wintry conditions experiencing in UK these days to show their disgust and anger to the Sri Lankan authorities and to demand abducted activists release forthwith. Quite contrast to the prevailing weather in the surrounding area atmosphere at the demonstration was felt warmed with protesters carrying placards and shouted slogans demanding ruling party administration in Sri Lanka to respect human rights and to stop disappearances. Demonstration was held for more than two hours with the participation and solidarity with the couple of Sri Lankan and foreign leftist movements.

Ending the demonstration representatives of the MPS – UK handed over a letter to the Sri Lankan High Commission in UK demanding the release of two activists and to take further actions if it fails to respond positively.  Full text of the letter handed over to the Sri Lankan High Commission in London is as follows:

His excellency Dr Chris Nonis

High Commissioner of Sri Lanka in UK

The Sri lanka High Commission

13 Hyde Park Corner

LondonW2 2LU

Dear Sir,

URGENT APPEAL: RELEASE LALITH KUMAR VEERARAJ AND KUGAN MURUGANATHAN

Movement for Peoples Struggle- Committee in UKis the UK arm of the recently inaugurated peoples’ movement in Sri Lanka. We are a cross section of the Sri Lankan immigrants in UK work in support of the Movement for Peoples Struggle (MPS) in Sri Lanka which is formed to raise a voice and to struggle on behalf of suppressed people in Sri Lanka. Today we have staged this protest demonstration as a mark of strong protest and to demand Sri Lankan government to release abducted two MPS activists who engaged in human rights activities in the Northern Jaffna District.

Your excellency may undoubtedly aware of the fact that Mr. Lalith Kumar Veeraraj who is the MPS Jaffna district organizer, and Mr. Kugan Muruganathan, another activist are abducted inside Jaffna High Security Zone and illegally detained by the Sri Lankan military establishments. Their whereabouts are still not known to the victim’s families despite the fact that repeated pleas and requests by victims families, political parties and various other national and international organizations. On 16 December government media spokesman minister Keheliya Rambukwella admitted at a media conference that the duo are not missing. On this backdrop this is a very serious situation and the credibility of the Sri Lankan government is questionable being unable to disclose missing persons whereabouts.

We would like to stress our point very clearly that we expect your excellency will take necessary steps to convey our message to the Sri Lankan government that we expect Mr Lalith Kumar Veeraraj and Mr Kugan Muruganathan will be released with immediate effect and thereby create an environment in Sri Lanka where all people can actively participate in democracy, freedom to express will be restored and human rights will be respected. This incident took place in Sri Lanka has disturbed and raised concerns irrespective of our diverse backgrounds as immigrants from Sri Lanka. It has touched and felt across all ethnic and religious boundaries and will take this opportunity to express our disgust and displeasure to the ruling party administration in Sri Lanka.

If governing party fails to respond to our request forthwith we have no alternative but to lobby UK parliamentarians in our constituencies irrespective of their party in the UK parliament and to go before international human rights organizations and UN if needed.

Yours sincerely

MOVEMENT FOR PEOPLES STRUGGLE- COMMITTEE IN UK
